This year's theme for prom night, is Masquerade. It's not too hard to imagine that Masquerade balls used to be extremely popular in the times of Shakespeare. Nowadays, these costume parties are less prevalent, but still fun. The distinguishing feature of one of these balls is that the guests wear masks to disguise their identity.
Pearl 2013 is going to experience one class of a proml at BITS Pilani Hyderabad. A Black Tie event, also calls for what most would say, a special night for special friendship, love, romance and understanding.
Do join us, 8th March, Friday night, at the Student Activity Centre.

Hakuna Matata! Made popular by the renowned 1994 movie Lion King, the Swahili phrase roughly translates to 'Don't worry, be happy' and that is precisely what we're going to do this year at Pearl'13! It's fun time with Pearl around the corner; it'll be your destination for all competitions, events and stunning pro-shows all lined up to enthral you. It's your chance once again, to excel in the cultural events, groove to the music and have a great time. While the likes of Mario and Pac-man entertained you last time around, this time it'll be Timon and Pumbaa singing Hakuna Matata, convincing you to leave behind your troubles, forget your worries and be happy!
The Pearl'12 theme of '8-bit gaming' was a successful endeavour where the arts team had a gala time decorating the campus and it wasn't left unappreciated as we saw huge crowds turning up to be a part of the extravaganza. The pro-shows included Benny Dayal and foreign artistes like Ela Rose, David Deejay and a Belgian metal band, Thurisaz, entertaining thousands that gathered. The flagship events like Til' Deaf Do We Part and Fraglore attracted good competition.
Come March, let go of all your inhibitions, troubles and worries and get ready for 3 days of splendid fun at BITS Pilani Hyderabad. Teleport to world of freedom and joy; unwind, untangle and loosen up; prepare yourselves for a world where your past doesn't matter, your future doesn't yet exist and the present is all that matters, and you'll be enjoying your 'present' if it's at Pearl'13 alright!
FUN-By the people, for the people, of the people.
The above line says it all. The Department of Informalz organizes and conducts events aimed at entertaining the crowd during PEARL, cultural fest of BITS-Pilani,Hyderabad campus. With the motto of 'redefining entertainment', Informalz makes sure that you have a great time through a plethora of innovative events.
There is nothing special about making events, but Informalz events are far from the usual stuff. Our events involve a bit of out-of-the-box thinking which aims at breaking the monotony; Rules are doneaway with. Chess was boring, Anti-chess is the new buzz- where players play to lose instead of the usual approach. We host Tug-Of-War, which is not exactly known for its innovation, but is made interesting by adding weight limits instead of team size limits. The GANGNEXT - one particular group event that overcome all the hurdles in their epic run till the finals. F.R.I.E.N.D.S kept Foosball contained inside the four walls. We brought it out in the open. And Human Foosball became an instant hit.
One of the very few departments that work for all throughout the three days of the fest, Informalz is an integral part of PEARL and ATMOS. With many different events, there are sure to be no dull moments during fests.{Hakuna matata}.
f Our events are particularly designed for people with different interests. Treasure Hunt is for those who dont mind wracking their brains on cryptic puzzles and riddles; for people with an interest in quizzing, Entertainment Quizes and Bidding gives some food for thought; Wordstock and Brain Teasers give people a reality check of their prowess in English and their knack at cracking conundrums; Mister and Miss Informalz is a fact revealing questionnaire organized by Informalz which aims at identifying the two best CRAZY people on campus during PEARL who can strike a chord with the junta and entertain them.
Apart from all these staple events, we organize Decode, Bow and Arrow, Maze Run, Dart Board, Pearl Race and many other events which have never failed to shatter the expectations of the audience.
One of the cornerstones behind the success of Informalz has been its inventiveness and its belief in originality. We firmly believe in the philosophy of continual innovation even if comes at the price of replacing an established and popular event with a new untried one. Slow cycling, one of our events during PEARL '12, used to attract a huge crowd. However we decided to stop it after a couple of years since the need to come up with a new event was being felt. Our events always have a surprise element attached to it which aims to catch the contestants on the wrong foot. It's been 4 years since The Department of Informalz has been entertaining BITSians and the outstation candidates alike and will continue to do so in the years to follow.

Indian music is the soul and heart of music in India as we know it. To live in India is to hum along with Kishor Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar from the past while singing along to Shaan, Shankar Mahadevan and A.R. Rahman from the present. This is the place where movies without an original music score are an oddity. This is the place where Chak-de-India, a movie track, can become an anthem for a whole nation. This is the place where music literally touches a billion hearts. Are you one of them artists? Can you make the crowd go wild to your music? Then this is where you should be.

India is a land of cultures, and music has been in our history books as long as we can remember. Raga and Taal have shaped the culture of India from times forgotten, with greats, such as Tansen from Akbar's court to Pandit Ravishankar from the 21st century, keeping the flames alive. If you think you've mastered your vocal chords, or your instruments in this beautiful discipline, then show us your talents in Gandhaara.

The Bulls & Bears Club presents...
A platform where we will together replicate the market and prove that nothing but Market Sentiments Govern it.
The open outcry system for trading Stocks is a verbal auction between buyers and sellers of a commodity. Using the open outcry system for placing buys and sells, the buyers and sellers would "cry" out his best offer price. When they "cry" out the same price, a Trade is made.
Each participant will begin with an initial credit. We will flash news about different stocks in regular time intervals. The participants have to anticipate the change in prices and react accordingly so as to gain maximum profit.
Rule 1: Always obey the rules.
Rule 2: To save time and win you have to presume that the organisers are the smartest people on this planet.
Rule 3: Run faster, shout louder!!
Rule 4: Well, there actually are no rules, but still keep in mind Rule: 2!
Initially we conduct a workshop to teach how the Markets work and explain the methodology of the commodity trading in this game.

THE GAME IS SET RULES R MEND U JUST GOTTA CATCH THE RIGHT FISH IN THE NET!
Rules/Instructions/Guidelines: BLUFF MASTER
You own a corporation and want to expand operations in BITS HYD by setting up a new factory for which you require both Land and License. Only the concerned ministers have the authority to grant land/licenses. As resources are scarce, the number of competing companies is more than the number of sectors of available land.
Each company will start with fixed cash reserves.
Each company has majority share in its own company and also has limited ownership (in % share terms) in other companies.
The game will proceed in the following format:
Round 1: Land allotment - 4 different types of land. 1 person from each team will meet the minister and make a bid. The highest/most convincing bidders will be awarded with the land.
Round 2: Trading round - Each company has to make atleast 2 buy/sell transactions. The share prices of companies will keep on fluctuating as per the forces of demand/supply.
Round 3: License allotment - Similar to round 1.
Round 4: Trading round - Similar to round 2.
Your objective is to maximize your total assets. This can be done through:
Purchasing land, acquiring licenses which will add to your company's worth.
Government will grant bonuses to companies who are successful in acquiring land/licenses which will further add to the company's worth.
Purchasing shares of other companies whose asset value is more will increase your asset value as well.
After each round of land and license allotment, the names of companies to whom the land/license has been will be disclosed. This information can be used in speculating whose shares need to be bought/sold in the subsequent trading rounds.
Rules:
Each transaction has to be recorded in the balance sheet, duly signed by the external auditor. Without the sign, the transaction will be deemed void.
Bribe amount shouldn't be more than 25% of the land price.
Each company has to make atleast 1 buy as well as sell transactions in trading round.
All bribes are to be accounted under Miscellaneous expenses in the balance sheet.
Tips:
Bribe is dead investment as it doesn't add to a company's assets. Though, an apt bribe which gets you the land having more bonus value will definitely be a fruitful investment.
You can also win the competition by purchasing shares of other companies even if you have not been able to acquire any land or license.

Guitar/Vocals – Sel Balamir
Drums – Matt Brobin
Bass – Alexander "Magnum" Redhead
Guitar - Steve Durose
With a sound that draws as much from post-rock’s modernity as it does from the classic space rock grooves of the past, Amplifier’s resurgence into the music scene with 2011’s ‘The Octopus’ was not just a celebratory success story of sticking it to ‘the man’, but testament to the dogged determination that drives this unique Mancunian trio ever onwards. In the near 14 years of their existence, Amplifier have suffered from more than their fair share of the kind of pitfalls that the music industry can throw at a band, defiantly stuck two fingers up to the perceived manner of doing business and set about creating their own music for themselves and their fans. For an alternative band unafraid to toy with rock conventions, it was a steadfastly punk rock way of doing their own business.
Then again, there has always been something special that sets Amplifier apart. I first crossed paths with the band within months of them forming in 1998, and even then the stand-out song of their early sets was a song called Motorhead. Not the Lemmy-penned song of the same name, but their own dizzying space/prog/metal/alternative anthem that still crops up in their live set today. A youthful display of the unyielding belief that has fired Sel Balamir, Neil Mahony and Matt Brobin (the same trio who make up Amplifier today) to the point where they can dictate their career on their own terms.
Initially, Amplifier secured a deal with the classic label Music For Nations, who released the band’s incredibly well received self-titled debut album in 2004. Within weeks, the label had been bought out by the larger Sony/BMG corporation who deemed the likes of Amplifier surplus to requirements. Undaunted, the band secured the rights to ‘Amplifier’ and set about a new deal with German label SPV. For them, Amplifier recorded the ‘The Astronaut Dismantles HAL’ EP in 2005 and second full-length album ‘Insider’. SPV went bust. If this actually sounds a bit like the building of Camelot sketch from Monty Python’s Holy Grail movie, then that’s because it’s a pretty good description of the machinations of the music industry that have, in 2011, pretty much brought it to its collective knees.
Amplifier, however, are made of sterner stuff. “At that point we decided ‘Fuck it, we’ll just go back to being how we were before we even had a record deal’,” Balamir told me when The Octopus was released. And that’s exactly what the band have done. Taking control of every facet of their career, they answer to no one but themselves and their fans. The results have been nothing short of spectacular.
‘The Octopus’, a gargantuan, spellbinding two-album journey sets Amplifier up as forerunners of a new approach in alt/progressive music. Ditching the stereotypical and often parodied sprawling excess of the past, but retaining a prodigious talent and a refusal to be bowed by perceived convention, they forge not just a new path for themselves, but spearhead an approach which has seen alt/progressive music have a vibrant new life breathed into it.
If truth be told, Amplifier in 2011 are as exciting a prospect as they were when I first clapped eyes and ears on them back in 1998. The reason being that all the same qualities that made them such an attractive proposition back then hold true today. To have persevered in the face of adversity and hold true to your own ideals is not a trait to be sniffed at. The world remains their proverbial oyster. This time around watch them grab it with style.

Junkyard Groove was formed in the year 2005 and have become a main stay in the Indian Independent music scene. A band that has seen every high and low of being in a band, from being signed to an international label, opening for some of the biggest bands in the world like Iron maiden, Incubus, Prodigy, Robert Plant and more, to being dropped from their label, and going through line up changes.
Their first album 11:11 was a huge success garnering a big fan base and winning quite a few awards. Their song "its Ok" has become a part of play lists on every English radio station in India. Junkyard Groove was one of the first bands to take advantage of social media and viral marketing in India.
In April 2011 after a small hiccup Junkyard Groove was back with a new line up with Ameeth Thomas founding member on vocals and guitars, Naveen Thomas coming in on lead guitars a very experienced guitarist from Bangalore, Sajith Satya the bass prodigy from Chennai belonging to the Satya clan and Shashank Vijay a drummer that makes a four piece band sound like 5. Since then they have put out 2 singles Beautiful Crime and Speed of love written, produced and engineered by front man Ameeth Thomas.
One thing is for sure this is a band that does not play by anyone's rules but their own.

Nikhil D'Souza is a guitarist/singer-songwriter from Mumbai. The genre might be loosely defined as pop/alternative with folk influences. The music has a full melodic quality to it mainly due to the use of alternative tunings, favored by such artists as Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley, on most of the tracks.
His main influences have been Sting, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, and Damien Rice besides several others.

Rohit Barker started off making radio a hobby about 13 years ago, simply because back then the money out there for the 'profession' was just about enough to cover gas costs to and from the studios.
From All India Radio, he went on to Channel V for a while as VJ. From there, he had his first professional foray into radio when he moved to Radio Indigo and then moved on to Radio City for a couple of years. From Radio City, he left for Dubai FM.
On his return from his desert sojourn to Bangalore, Rohit started to syndicate his own programming and airing it in Bangalore. After a stint at Radio City for a while, Rohit is with Radio Indigo currently. Rohit Barker has also been DJ'ing for just over two years now, after standing behind a DJ console with Bangalore's well known DJ and RJ Ivan for over a decade and hosting a radio show with him for about the same amount of time, he pretty much knew what went where and how.
His heart will always remain in Radio and DJ'ing, he has worked his way through the alphabet, from an MC to an RJ to a VJ and a DJ, simply because he is in constant awe of great music and what it can do to you, not to mention what he can do to you over a mike and from behind a DJ console.
